Early, Middle and Late Poker Positions

Before delving into strategies and studies of poker, individuals should learn about the early, late and middle poker positions. By understanding these in depth, individuals will have a better handle on the basics and increase their chances of winning.

The Positions

The two seats next to the small blind and big blind are called the early position, while the position between the big and small blinds and the button is the middle position. The middle position is one of the hardest to play from. The late position is the one before the button, which is the dealer. This is a great position to raise from, and the most advantageous when you have studied your opponents properly.

Using Position to Your Advantage

There is a way to use each position to your advantage, and doing so can help you increase your chances of winning. If you are playing from the early position, you are going to want to go for premium hands as the action after the call is going to fall to you. When playing from the middle position, you are going to want to play more conservatively unless you're playing with an absolute stellar hand. The late position is perhaps the best position and the most beneficial.

It is essential to learn the positions and understand the vulnerabilities and advantages of each one. When you do this, you can increase your chances of winning by playing based on your position. Studying your opponents will also help you utilize your position for leverage in certain situations.
